Murray cod

The Murray cod (*Maccullochella peelii*) is Australia's largest freshwater fish, native to the Murray-Darling River system. It can grow up to 1.8 meters (6 feet) long and weigh over 100 kilograms (220 pounds). Known for its robust body and powerful jaw, it’s a top predator in its habitat, feeding on smaller fish, crustaceans, and insects. The Murray cod is highly valued for sport fishing and cultural significance but has faced threats from overfishing, habitat loss, and invasive species. Conservation efforts aim to protect and restore its populations in the wild.
