Murphy's sign

Murphy’s sign is a clinical test used by healthcare providers to assess for cholecystitis, which is inflammation of the gallbladder. During the examination, the patient lies down, and the doctor gently presses on the area around the right side of the upper abdomen, where the gallbladder is located. Then, the patient is asked to take a deep breath. If the gallbladder is inflamed, this pressure causes pain and the patient may suddenly stop inhaling because of discomfort. A positive Murphy’s sign suggests inflammation or problems with the gallbladder requiring further investigation.
