Murex snails

Murex snails are a family of marine gastropods known for their ornate, spiny shells and powerful, radula-equipped mouths. Found in warm, tropical waters, they play a role in coastal ecosystems as predators of other mollusks and small marine animals. Historically, their shells were used to produce purple dye, highly prized in ancient times. These snails are slow-moving and have a distinctive, often elaborately decorated shell that protects them from predators. They are active mostly at night and contribute to the biodiversity and health of coral reef environments.
