Multimodal Discourse
Multimodal discourse refers to communication that uses multiple modes or channels simultaneously—such as spoken words, gestures, facial expressions, images, and written text—to convey meaning. It recognizes that meaning is often created through a combination of these modes working together, rather than through language alone. For example, in a classroom presentation, a speaker’s words, visuals on a slide, and their gestures all contribute to how the message is understood. Multimodal discourse helps us communicate more richly and effectively, reflecting how humans naturally use various methods to share ideas and emotions.
