Muhammad Omar

Muhammad Omar, also known as Mullah Omar, was the founder and leader of the Taliban, a militant Islamic group that controlled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. He aimed to establish a strict Islamic government based on his interpretation of Islamic law. Under his leadership, the Taliban enforced harsh rules, especially against women and minorities. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the U.S.-led coalition ousted the Taliban from power. Omar then became a symbolic figure, leading insurgent efforts against foreign forces and the Afghan government until his death was announced in 2013.
