Muhammad I (Emir of Granada)
Muhammad I, also known as Muhammad ibn Yusuf ibn Nasr, was the first ruler of the Nasrid dynasty, governing the Emirate of Granada from 1238 to 1273. He established Granada as an independent Muslim kingdom in southern Spain after the decline of the Almohad Caliphate. Known for strengthening the state's defenses and promoting economic growth, Muhammad I laid the foundations for what would become a powerful and culturally rich emirate. His leadership marked the beginning of Granada’s golden age, balancing diplomacy and military strength to preserve its independence amid Christian Christian Reconquista efforts.
