Mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue
Mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) is a network of immune system components located in the mucous membranes lining areas like the mouth, nose, throat, gut, and urogenital tract. Its main role is to detect and respond to pathogens (germs) that enter the body through these mucous membranes. MALT contains immune cells such as lymphocytes and specialized tissues that recognize and fight infections early, preventing them from spreading. As part of the body's overall immune defense, MALT helps maintain health by providing localized protection at common entry points for germs.
