MT (middle temporal area)

The middle temporal area (MT), also known as V5, is a part of the brain involved in processing visual motion. Located in the brain’s visual cortex, MT helps us perceive the movement of objects, determining speed and direction, which is essential for understanding our environment and guiding actions like catching a ball or crossing the street. It works by analyzing the motion signals from the eyes and integrating them to create a cohesive sense of movement in our surroundings. Damage to MT can result in difficulties perceiving motion, a condition called akinetopsia, where moving objects appear to freeze or "stutter."
