Mozarabic music

Mozarabic music refers to the medieval Christian musical tradition that developed among the Mozarabs—Christians living under Moorish rule in Iberia during the early Middle Ages. Characterized by its use of local Latin texts and distinctive melodies, it blends early Christian chant styles with Iberian and Moorish influences. Often performed in monasteries and churches, Mozarabic music features monophonic (single melody line) singing with melodic ornamentation and modal scales, creating a unique sound distinct from Gregorian chant. Although much of it was orally transmitted and later supplanted by other liturgical music, it remains an important cultural remnant of medieval Spain’s diverse religious and artistic heritage.
