Motte-and-Bailey

The Motte-and-Bailey is a defensive structure from medieval times, consisting of a fortified hill (motte) topped with a stronghold and an surrounding enclosed area (bailey) used for living and activities. In debates or arguments, the term is used metaphorically: the "motte" represents a position that others find easy to defend or agree with, while the "bailey" is a more complex or controversial claim that is harder to defend. When challenged, someone might retreat from the complicated claim to the simpler one (motte), then later reassert the original position once the challenge has passed.
