motor unit action potential

A motor unit action potential (MUAP) is the electrical signal generated when a group of muscle fibers, all controlled by a single nerve cell (motor neuron), respond together during muscle activation. When your brain sends a signal to move a muscle, the nerve activates multiple fibers simultaneously, creating a detectable electrical pattern. This pattern, measured by electromyography (EMG), reflects how well the nerve and muscle are functioning. MUAPs help doctors assess muscle health and nerve function, revealing if there are issues like nerve damage or muscle disease.
