Motor Neuron Diseases
Motor neuron diseases (MNDs) are a group of progressive neurological disorders that affect the motor neurons, which are the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. This means that people with MNDs may experience weakness, muscle wasting, and difficulties with speaking, swallowing, and movement. The most common type is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). MNDs can significantly impact quality of life, as they lead to increasing disability over time. While the exact cause remains unknown, research is ongoing, and there is currently no cure, though treatments can help manage symptoms and improve comfort.
