Moonshine (alcohol)
Moonshine is illegally produced or homemade alcohol, typically distilled in secret to avoid taxes and regulation. It is often made from grains, fruits, or sugar, and distilled in makeshift stills. Because of unregulated production, the quality and safety of moonshine can vary widely, sometimes containing harmful impurities or high alcohol levels. Historically associated with rural areas and illegal activities, modern regulations have formalized the production of legal spirits, but "moonshine" remains a term for unlicensed, clandestine distillation. Despite its risky reputation, some craft distillers produce legal versions labeled as "moonshine" for cultural or nostalgic appeal.
