Montfort's Parliament

Montfort’s Parliament, held in 1295 in England, was the first in history to include representatives from both towns (burgesses) and counties (knights), laying the groundwork for modern parliamentary democracy. Simon de Montfort, a nobleman, summoned this assembly to consult with leading citizens and create broader political participation beyond the king’s council. Although it was short-lived, the parliament marked a significant step toward involving commoners in governance, shaping the development of elected legislatures and influencing future parliamentary systems in England.
