Monte Cassino Polish II Corps

The Polish II Corps was a major unit of the Polish military during World War II, formed in 1943 under British command. Composed of Polish soldiers in exile, it fought on the Western Front, most notably in Italy. Its most famous battle was the assault on Monte Cassino in 1944, a key route through the mountains to Rome. The corps played a significant role in defeating German defenses, helping secure Italy’s liberation. Despite intense combat and losses, the Polish II Corps demonstrated resilience and contributed significantly to Allied efforts in the Mediterranean theater.
