Montagu-Chelmsford Committee

The Montagu-Celmsford Committee was a group formed in 1918 to recommend how to gradually introduce self-governing reforms in India. Named after British officials Edwin Montagu and Lord Chelmsford, the committee proposed a system called "dyarchy" in which certain areas of government—like finance and lawmaking—would be managed locally by Indians, while others remained under British control. This marked a step toward Indian self-governance, balancing Indian participation with continued British oversight. Their recommendations laid the foundation for later constitutional developments in India.
