Montagnard
The Montagnard, also known as Degar, refers to several indigenous ethnic groups native to the Central Highlands of Vietnam. They have distinct languages, cultures, and traditions, often living in rural, mountainous areas. Historically, they have maintained unique identities separate from the majority Vietnamese population. During the Vietnam War, many Montagnard communities supported U.S. forces and faced repression afterward. Today, they continue to struggle for cultural recognition and land rights within Vietnam. Their identity is centered around a strong connection to their land, traditions, and community.
