Money Laundering Investigations
Money laundering investigations are efforts to trace and uncover funds that have been obtained through illegal activities, like drug trafficking or fraud, which are then disguised to appear legitimate. The process typically involves three steps: placement, where the illicit money is introduced into the financial system; layering, which involves complex transactions to obscure the money's origin; and integration, where the laundered funds are reintegrated into the economy, making them seem lawful. Authorities use financial records, surveillance, and other tools to identify suspicious transactions and link them to criminal activities.
