Molting and growth in crustaceans

Molting is the process by which crustaceans, such as crabs and lobsters, shed their old exoskeleton to allow for growth. As these animals grow, their hard outer shell becomes too tight. To accommodate this, they absorb water, causing their exoskeleton to crack. After shedding, they are temporarily soft and vulnerable, but soon their new shell hardens. This process is crucial for their growth and development, happening multiple times throughout their lives. Understanding molting helps us appreciate how these creatures adapt and thrive in their environments.
