Molluscs are a diverse group of soft-bodied invertebrates, many with shells, that include animals like snails, clams, octopuses, and squids. They typically have a muscular foot for movement, a visceral mass containing most organs, and a mantle that secretes calcium carbonate to form their shells (if they have one). Molluscs live in a variety of environments, from deep oceans to freshwater and terrestrial habitats. They play important roles in ecosystems as grazers, prey, and filter feeders, and some are valuable for food and pearls. Their diversity reflects complex adaptations for survival across many environments.
