Modern Assyrians

Modern Assyrians are an ethnic group descended from the ancient Assyrians of Mesopotamia, primarily residing in Iraq, Syria, Iran, Turkey, and the diaspora worldwide. They speak modern dialects of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic, maintain distinctive cultural traditions, and identify with their ancient heritage while practicing Christianity—mainly churches like the Assyrian Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic Church, and Syriac Orthodox Church. Despite facing historical persecution, displacement, and genocide, they continue to preserve their language, religion, and cultural identity, contributing to the diversity of contemporary Middle Eastern and global communities.
