Mixtec social structure

The Mixtec social structure was organized around a hierarchy of noble rulers, including lords and aristocrats, who governed city-states (known as “alkanes”). Commoners, such as farmers, artisans, and laborers, formed the majority of the population and supported the elite class. There was also a class of scribes and administrators responsible for maintaining records and religious practices. Social status was often inherited, and land ownership was central to wealth and power. kinship ties and ceremonial roles reinforced social distinctions, with a focus on loyalty to local rulers and community rituals.
