Mixtec languages
Mixtec languages are a group of indigenous languages spoken by the Mixtec people primarily in Oaxaca, Puebla, and surrounding regions of Mexico. They belong to the Oto-Manguean language family and consist of numerous dialects that can be quite different from each other, making mutual understanding challenging. These languages have rich oral traditions, including storytelling and ceremonial chants, and use complex tonal systems where pitch affects meaning. Despite historical pressures, several Mixtec varieties are still actively spoken and written, contributing to Mexico's diverse linguistic and cultural landscape.
