Mitochondrial DNA Testing

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) testing analyzes the small amount of genetic material found in mitochondria, the energy-producing structures within our cells. Unlike nuclear DNA, mtDNA is inherited exclusively from the mother, making it useful for tracing maternal ancestry and identifying relatives through maternal lines. This testing is often used in genealogy, forensic investigations, and certain medical diagnoses. It provides insights into genetic relationships over many generations, as mtDNA remains relatively unchanged over time, allowing researchers to compare maternal lineages and uncover connections that might be missed with other types of DNA testing.
