Mitigation Theory

Mitigation Theory explains how individuals modify their language and behavior to reduce tension, conflict, or negative impressions during interactions. When people face discomfort, uncertainty, or face sensitive topics, they tend to soften their communication—using polite words, humor, or deflective responses—to protect themselves and build smoother relationships. Essentially, it’s about how people unconsciously or consciously adjust their behavior to make conversations less confrontational and more acceptable to others.
