Mithraic Temples

Mithraic temples were dedicated spaces for worshiping the ancient Roman mystery religion centered on the god Mithras. Originating in Persia, the cult gained popularity among Roman soldiers and elites from the 1st to 4th centuries CE. These underground or semi-open sanctuaries often feature central reliefs depicting Mithras slaying a bull, symbolizing themes of life and renewal. The rituals were secretive, involving initiations and shared meals, and the temples were designed to foster community and spiritual connection. While lesser-known today, Mithraic temples provide insight into the diverse religious practices of the Roman Empire.
