minstrel show
A minstrel show was a popular form of entertainment in the 19th and early 20th centuries in the United States, characterized by performances that included singing, dancing, comedy skits, and stock characters. These shows often featured white performers in blackface makeup, portraying exaggerated and stereotypical depictions of Black people. Minstrel shows reinforced racist stereotypes and played a significant role in shaping negative perceptions of African Americans. While it was a widespread entertainment form at the time, today they are recognized as offensive and racist for their portrayal of Black individuals and perpetuation of discrimination.
