Minnesota History
Minnesota's history is shaped by Native American tribes, such as the Dakota and Ojibwe, who inhabited the region for thousands of years. European exploration began in the 1600s, with the French trading fur with these tribes. The area became part of the U.S. through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, leading to rapid settlement and industry, especially in timber, mining, and agriculture. Minnesota's statehood was granted in 1858. The state has a diverse cultural heritage, notable contributions to arts and innovation, and a history marked by migration, racial challenges, and a strong sense of community and environmental stewardship.
