Military Air Transport Service (MATS)

The Military Air Transport Service (MATS) was a U.S. military organization responsible for global air logistics, providing rapid transportation of personnel, equipment, and supplies during the Cold War era. Established in 1948, it combined the airlift capabilities of the Air Force and Navy to ensure strategic mobility and support for defense operations worldwide. MATS used large cargo and transport aircraft to connect distant locations quickly, enhancing military readiness and response. In 1966, it was reorganized into the Military Airlift Command, continuing its mission of efficient air logistics for national security.
