Mijikenda
The Mijikenda are a group of related ethnic communities along Kenya's coast, primarily comprising nine sub-groups, each with distinct languages and cultures. They are known for their rich traditions, coastal livelihoods like fishing and farming, and their iconic sacred forest sites called "Kayas," which serve religious, social, and ancestral purposes. Historically, the Mijikenda have maintained a strong cultural identity despite influences from Bantu, Arab, and European traders. Today, they continue to celebrate their heritage through music, dance, and rituals, blending ancient customs with modern life while playing a vital role in Kenya's coastal region.
