Émigré

An émigré is a person who leaves their home country to settle in another, often due to political, economic, or social reasons. The term emphasizes the act of migration out of a country, usually implying a permanent or long-term move. Émigrés may do so voluntarily or due to circumstances like persecution or conflict. Historically, the term has been used to describe people fleeing regimes or seeking better opportunities elsewhere. It is distinct from "immigrant," which generally refers to someone arriving in a new country, as émigré emphasizes departure.
