Micrurus (genus)

Micrurus is a genus of venomous snakes commonly known as coral snakes, found in the Americas. They are characterized by their striking, banded coloration with bright red, yellow, and black rings, which serve as a warning to predators. Despite their vibrant appearance, they are generally shy and reclusive, feeding mainly on small lizards and frogs. Their potent neurotoxic venom can cause paralysis in prey and, if untreated, can be dangerous to humans. Micrurus species play a vital role in their ecosystems by controlling populations of their prey and are important in herpetological research.
