Microvascular decompression (MVD) is a surgical procedure used to relieve nerve compression caused by blood vessels. When a blood vessel presses against a nerve, it can cause pain, dizziness, or other symptoms. During MVD, a neurosurgeon makes a small opening in the skull to access the affected nerve. Using a microscope, the surgeon carefully separates the blood vessel from the nerve and places a tiny cushion, like a Teflon pad, between them. This prevents the vessel from pressing on the nerve, alleviating symptoms and allowing normal nerve function. The procedure aims to provide long-term relief with minimal recovery time.
