Microtonality

Microtonality refers to musical systems that use intervals smaller than the traditional half-step (semitone) in Western music. While standard Western tunes typically divide an octave into 12 equal parts, microtonality explores alternative divisions, creating sounds with pitches that are subtly or distinctly different from conventional notes. This approach can produce novel tonal colors, expressiveness, and textures found in various world musics and experimental compositions. Essentially, microtonality expands the palette of musical pitch, allowing for more nuanced and diverse soundscapes beyond standard tuning systems.
