Microscopic Colitis

Microscopic colitis is an intestinal condition causing chronic diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. Unlike other forms of colitis, the colon appears normal during a standard colonoscopy, but under a microscope, inflammation and injury to the colon lining are revealed. It primarily affects middle-aged and older adults and may be triggered by medications, autoimmune factors, or smoking. Symptoms often include watery, non-bloody diarrhea, urgency, and sometimes weight loss. Diagnosis requires a biopsy from the colon, and treatment typically involves anti-inflammatory medications like budesonide, lifestyle changes, and addressing any underlying causes to manage symptoms effectively.
