microinsults

Microinsults are subtle, often unconscious remarks or actions that dismiss or demean someone’s identity, often related to their race, gender, or other aspects of their identity. These microaggressions can make the person on the receiving end feel undervalued or marginalized without overt hostility. For example, suggesting someone is only successful because of their background, or unintentionally questioning their competence, are microinsults. They are small, seemingly unintentional slights that, over time, can impact a person’s confidence and sense of belonging. Recognizing and addressing microinsults promotes a more respectful and inclusive environment.
