microbubbles

Microbubbles are tiny bubbles, usually smaller than a human hair, filled with gas or air. They are used in medical imaging, especially ultrasound, to improve the visibility of blood vessels and organs. When injected into the bloodstream, microbubbles enhance the ultrasound signal, making it easier to detect abnormalities or diagnose conditions. They are generally safe, circulate naturally, and are eliminated from the body through the lungs. Beyond imaging, microbubbles are also explored for targeted drug delivery, where they can release medicine directly to specific sites within the body when burst by ultrasound waves.
