Microbial Loop
The microbial loop is a key part of the ocean’s ecosystem that recycles nutrients and energy. Tiny organisms called microbes, including bacteria and microscopic algae, break down dead organic material and organic wastes. These microbes are eaten by larger plankton, which in turn feed bigger marine animals. This process helps keep nutrients available in the water so that phytoplankton (tiny plants) can grow and support the ocean food web. Essentially, the microbial loop efficiently reuses organic matter, sustaining marine life and maintaining the health of ocean ecosystems.
