Michiel de Ruyter

Michiel de Ruyter (1607–1676) was a renowned Dutch admiral and military leader during the 17th century, often regarded as one of the greatest naval commanders in history. He played a key role in Europe's struggle for maritime dominance, especially during the Anglo-Dutch Wars, by leading successful naval campaigns that protected Dutch trade and expanded their influence. Known for his strategic skill, courage, and leadership, de Ruyter helped establish the Netherlands as a major maritime power in the Age of Sail, and remains a celebrated national hero.
