Mexican political history
Mexican political history features a transition from indigenous governance and Spanish colonial rule to independence in 1821. The 19th century was marked by instability, wars, and changing governments. The 20th century saw the dominance of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which maintained power for over 70 years through a combination of reform and control. Starting in the 1990s, Mexico transitioned toward more pluralistic, democratic elections, ending PRI's longhold. Today, Mexico has a federal republic with elected officials, facing challenges like corruption, economic inequality, and security issues, while also striving for stability and democratic development.
