Methane cycling
Methane cycling is the process by which methane is produced, transported, and broken down in the environment. Microorganisms called methanogens create methane in environments like wetlands and the bottom of oceans where oxygen is limited. This methane can move through the soil or water and is eventually consumed by other microbes known as methanotrophs, which convert methane into carbon dioxide. Some methane escapes into the atmosphere, contributing to greenhouse gases and climate change. Overall, methane cycling is a key part of Earth's carbon balance, involving the production, movement, and breakdown of methane within various ecosystems.
