Methacholine Challenge Test
The Methacholine Challenge Test is a procedure used to assess airway sensitivity and diagnose asthma. During the test, you breathe in a mist containing a substance called methacholine, which can cause your airways to narrow if you are sensitive to it. Before and after inhaling the mist, your lung function is measured using a spirometer, which checks how well you can breathe out air. If your lung function drops significantly after the methacholine, it suggests that you may have asthma or an asthma-like condition. This test helps doctors understand your respiratory health better.
