Meter Convention

The Meter Convention, officially called the International Meter Convention, is an agreement established in 1875 that created a standardized system for measuring length worldwide. It led to the creation of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and set the meter as the universal unit of length. The convention ensures consistency and accuracy in measurements across countries, enabling precise scientific, industrial, and commercial work. Essentially, it formalized a common standard for length measurement, making it possible for different nations and industries to communicate and operate with a shared understanding.
