Metaphysical Ontology
Metaphysical ontology is the study of what exists and the nature of being. It examines concepts like substance, which refers to the fundamental entities that make up reality (e.g., objects or beings), and essence, which is the intrinsic quality or characteristics that define what something is. For instance, the essence of a tree includes its properties like being a living organism and having leaves. Metaphysical ontology seeks to understand how these substances and essences relate and what it means for something to exist, ultimately exploring the framework of reality beyond the physical world.
