A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes one thing by stating it is another, highlighting similarities to create understanding or evoke emotion. Unlike literal language, metaphors don’t mean the subject is actually that thing; instead, they suggest a connection to enrich meaning or imagery. For example, saying "time is a thief" doesn’t mean time literally steals, but that it can take moments away quickly. Metaphors are used to clarify, add depth, or make descriptions more vivid by linking familiar concepts to unfamiliar ones.
