Metamemory

Metamemory refers to our awareness and understanding of our own memory processes. It involves knowing what we remember well, what we struggle to remember, and how to improve our memory. Essentially, it’s the ability to evaluate, monitor, and control our memory functions. For example, when you realize you might forget someone's name and decide to repeat it to yourself, that's metamemory in action. This self-awareness helps us make decisions about how to study or recall information effectively, thus enhancing our overall memory performance.
