Merit Goods

Merit goods are products or services that are considered beneficial for individuals and society, which people might undervalue or choose not to consume enough of on their own. Examples include education and healthcare. Governments often promote merit goods because their benefits extend beyond the individual, helping to improve overall well-being, productivity, and social equity. The idea is that these goods have positive externalities—advantages that benefit society—so providing them ensures more widespread access and optimal social outcomes.
