Meninges

The meninges are protective layers of tissue that surround the brain and spinal cord, acting like a shield to keep these vital parts safe. There are three main layers: the dura mater (outermost and toughest), the arachnoid mater (middle, web-like), and the pia mater (inner, delicate and closely attached to the brain and spinal cord). These layers help cushion the nervous system, provide blood supply, and contain cerebrospinal fluid, which cushions and nourishes the brain and spinal cord. Proper functioning of the meninges is essential for protecting and supporting the central nervous system.
