Melqart
Melqart was an ancient Phoenician and Tyrian god associated with creation, the sea, and colonization. Often considered the city’s protector and a symbol of sovereignty, he was worshipped as a god of maritime ventures and exploration. Melqart’s name translates roughly to “King of the City,” reflecting his role as a divine guardian of urban centers like Tyre. His worship involved ships, rituals, and offerings, emphasizing his connection to seafaring and trade. Over time, Melqart’s identity blended with other deities, influencing later cultures’ gods, such as Heracles in Greek tradition.
