melioidosis

Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei, which is found mainly in soil and water in tropical regions. People usually become infected through contact with contaminated soil or water, often via cuts, abrasions, or inhalation. Symptoms can vary widely, including fever, cough, chest pain, and even abscess formation; it can resemble other illnesses, making diagnosis challenging. If untreated, it can be serious or life-threatening, especially in those with weakened immune systems. Treatment typically involves prolonged antibiotic therapy to eradicate the bacteria.
